Opening Day April 3rd, 1984: Eric Show was nearly as good as Jake Peavy on this day, leading his
club to a 5-1 victory. While allowing just three hits and one walk in seven innings to the Pittsburgh
Pirates, Show allowed a run in the top of the 1st on an RBI groundout by second baseman Johnny
Ray, scoring Marvelle Wynne after a leadoff triple. Wynne accounted for all three Pirate hits, with
two doubles to go along with the triple. Coincidentally or not, the Padres traded for Wynne exactly
two years later on April 3, 1986. Unlike the 2008 team, the 1984 offense did their damage with the
long ball in the opener. The M & M boys, Kevin McReynolds and Carmelo Martinez each had a
homer and Alan Wiggins and Tony Gwynn hit back-to-back doubles to start the scoring for the Pads
in the bottom of the 1st. The "Goose", Rich Gossage, appeaqred in his first game as a Padre,
pitching two perfect innings in a non-save situation. The eventual NL Champions started off 10-2
and were in first place until April 27th. After dropping as low as 4th place in mid-May, they
re-captured the NL West lead on June 9th and never looked back, spending the remainder of the
season in 1st place.
