DRAFT ROUNDUP: What would a starting lineup of this season's picks look like? by Jason Martinez posted 6/09/08 So what if the chances are a million to one that all eight of these guys are in the Padres lineup together someday? Two or three of these guys might even go unsigned and never play a game in the Padres' system. I just thought it would be interesting to see what it would look like on paper. A starting lineup of draftees was possible after just the first seven rounds. It looks like they're bringing in a good combination of power and speed, but the team's philosophy of drafting players who have a high on-base percentage is evident througout the draft. CF Blake Tekotte (3rd Round Pick) - good on-base skills (.484 OBP) , bunts for base hits, steals bases (25 SB) LF Jason Kipnis (4th Round Pick) - good speed (21 SB) and on-base skills (.486 OBP) with some pop (14 HR, .659 SLG) RF Jaff Decker (1st Round, Supp.) - Described as having 'fantastic patience, big power and a beautiful swing' 1B Allan Dykstra (1st Round) - Padres rave about Dykstra having 'Petco Power', not even Petco would contain him 3B James Darnell (2nd Round) - A potential five-tool player with tremendous power, Darnell could end up in RF 2B Logan Forsythe (1st Round, Supp.) - Not unlike Antonelli, an athletic 3B with good plate discipline and gap power SS Cole Figueroa (6th Round) - solid middle IF with good all-around offensive skills (.353/.430/.536) and speed (20 SB) C Adam Zornes (7th Round) - considered a good defender with power; sounds like current prospect Nick Hundley |
